What is spirulina?

Spirulina is a blue-green algae, and is believed to be one of the oldest life forms on Earth.

First used by the Aztecs as an endurance-booster, spirulina is considered a Superfood — an all-in-one source of nutrients including protein levels comparable to eggs.

The Aztecs also used spirulina to treat various diseases, and legends say that the kingdom’s messengers used the algae to sustain their marathon runs. Modern research supports many of the alleged benefits of taking spirulina, and continues to study its potential for treating health concerns.

Spirulina has a bitter taste, so people often mix it with yogurts, juices, and smoothies to improve its flavor. Spirulina is commonly available as a supplement at health food stores.

Spirulina is a good source of: Thiamine (Vitamin B1), Riboflavin (Vitamin B2), Niacin (Vitamin B3), Copper and Iron.

Spirulina also contains Magnesium. This mineral supports normal daily functions like muscle use and your heartbeat. It’s also responsible for producing protein and creating energy — but most people don’t get enough in their diet.

Spirulina is a potent source of nutrients. It contains a powerful plant-based protein called Phycocyanin. Research shows this may have antioxidant, pain-relief, anti-inflammatory and brain-protective properties.

Why Spirulina is a game changer

Here we have outlined some of the impact Spirulina has for our Environment, Humans and Animals.

Impact # 1 - Photosynthesis
Photosynthesis, the process by which green plants transform light energy into chemical energy. During photosynthesis in green plants, light energy is captured and used to convert water, carbon dioxide, and minerals into oxygen and energy-rich organic compounds.

It would be impossible to overestimate the importance of photosynthesis in the maintenance of life on Earth. If photosynthesis ceased, there would soon be little food or other organic matter on Earth.

Impact # 2 - Human Nutrition
Spirulina is a well-known source of protein, vitamins and minerals.

Only 4 grams per day gives a significant amount of the RDA especially for small children between the age of 3 and 5 years

Impact # 3 - Animal Feed
The benefits of Spirulina, especially in Poultry, has been proven over time and can increase the muscle protein content in broiler chicken by 20%. In laying hens, supplemented with Spirulina, the cholesterol content in their eggs are lower.

Nutritional Benefits

As nature’s Superfood, Spirulina has a wide variety of nutritional benefits for both Humans and Animals. Here we look at an overview of some of the benefits.

HUMANS
Spirulina consist of 60% Protein with a very low fat and sugar content making it suitable for diabetics.

The availability of a daily, cost effective, Vitamin A supplement to people in poverty stricken areas are also the primary market driver in our food market sector.
Our Spirulina tablets/capsules will be further enhanced with Selenium and Magnesium to
the level where a daily dosage of 4 gr will give close to 100% of the RDA.

The natural high levels of Iron and Zinc will make it a complete multi-vitamin at a fraction of the cost of
comparative products. Spirulina contain a spectrum of Amino Acids and Carotenoids, especially Beta-carotene
found otherwise in carrots.

ANIMALS
The benefits of Spirulina, especially in Poultry, has been proven over time and can increase the muscle protein content in broiler chicken by 20%. In laying hens, supplemented with Spirulina, the cholesterol content in their eggs are lower.

The ability to produce Spirulina at an affordable price is key to the development of this market. Our target selling price of R75 per kg will slightly increase the price of poultry feed but this cost will be offset against the nutritional and growth benefits in chickens.

How nutrigen is creating an impact

With our unique solution combining multiple technologies, we create a holistic solution which benefits People & Planet!

Empowering Local Communities
Our concept Empowers communities by using as much community labour as possible which creates many jobs and restores the dignity of the unemployed by giving them an opportunity to earn a decent living to support their family.
Positive environmental impact
Carbon Sequestration, Waste to Energy, Hydrogen.
These are amongst the “buzz” words amongst environmental groups worldwide but none have a viable solution.

Our combination of technologies creates an environment that utilises these technologies in a feasible manner.

Health Benefits
Spirulina has long been known to as Natures Superfood.

With an abundance of protein, vitamins, minerals and amino acids. There is no “all in one” health source like it.

A closer Look at Tilapia fish

Yes, Tilapia is a real fish. It’s a common myth that the species is “man-made”—but that couldn’t be farther from the truth. While Tilapia is often raised in fish farms around the globe, the species is native to the Middle East and Africa. References to and drawings of Tilapia can even be dated back to Ancient Egypt.

Tilapia is loaded with protein and nutrients that can positively impact your health, like omega fatty acids. Omega-3, in particular, can minimize your risk of having a heart attack or stroke. In addition, omega-3 contributes to healthy brain function—helping you stay sharper for longer.

Tilapia is also a good source of lean protein, and is a great option if you’re looking to lose weight: a fillet contains 21 grams of protein, one gram of fat and only 90 calories. The species is also packed with phosphorus, which improves bone health

preserving

our planet

The algae growth rate can be increased by up to 300% with the injection of CO2 gas in the water. In open raceway ponds, the CO2 absorption from the atmosphere is limited without a gas injection system and the nutrient water is enhanced with Sodium Bicarbonate. This enhancement decreases the cost of Spirulina powder production by 40 to 60%.

For every output ton of Spirulina, we would qualify for Carbon Credits of 1.33 ton. At the maximum combined capacity in year 10 of 48 000 output tons per annum, at the current price of R120 per ton, the sundry Carbon Credit income will be R10.3 million.
The Carbon rate would increase substantially over the next 10 years and this additional income may be of significance on the income statement. Carbon Credits have not been included in the determination of the economic viability of the business.

Additional to the Carbon Credits, available on the sequestration of CO2, we will also be off the power grid in the next 2 years with the combination of Plasma Waste to Energy (WTE) plants adjusted to the requirement of each Spirulina production plant. A small mobile
facility of ½ ton waste per day, will produce approx. 350 000 kWh electricity per annum.
